Sino-Tibetan Gold Ring
Gold & Turquoise Saddle Ring
Chengdu, Sichuan, Eastern China for the Tibet Market
19th century
weight: 8g, height of bezel: 2cm
This gold saddle-style ring is clearly modelled on Tibetan saddle rings used as rings and as hair ornaments. The Chinese inscription to the reverse of the bezel indicates that it was made in Chengdu in China’s eastern Sichuan province. Most probably it was made for or commissioned by a Tibetan client.
The bezel comprises a turquoise cabochon in a raised box setting surrounded by gold granulation work. Dharma wheel motifs are engraved into the bezel on both sides of the turquoise setting between raised, ribbed borders.
