Jaipur Enamelled Gold Pendant

SOLD

Two-Sided, Enamelled, Gold Pendant

Jaipur, India

19th century

height: 5.8cm,. width: 3.4cm, weight: 9g

This very pretty and highly wearable gold pendant dates to 19th century Jaipur, an important centre for enamel-work on gold and gem setting. It is in the form of a flower bud, with five bunches of pearls suspended on gold wire from the pendant to serve as ‘stamens’. The pearls are secure beneath by tiny emerald-coloured beads (minor losses).

On one side, the pendant is enamelled with a Mughal-inspired floral spray with white petals against a red background.

On the other, there is a red lotus against ripples of light blue meant to denote water beneath an arched border of inset pearls.

The pendant’s sides are enamelled with the same blue rippled effect.

The pendant is suspended beneath a small disk that is enamelled on one side with a red flower against a white ground. On the other, the disk in set with a red stone cabochon. The edge of the disk is enamelled in dark green, although there are now losses to this, but these are not apparent from the front or reverse view of the pendant itself.
