Embroidered Rajasthan textile
Unusual Embroidered Phulkari Textile
Western Punjab, India
early 20th century
dimension: 135cm x 260cm (approx.)This textile comprises three red homespun cotton panels that have been sewn together by hand. The pieces have been embroidered with yellow and gold-coloured silk threads with a repeated geometric or possibly, a stylised peacock motif. A top corner has been embroidered mostly with the gold-coloured thread as have been the outer lengthwise borders. Why this corner has been differently embroidered is not clear but the effect has been intentional.
