Few castles and major temples in Japan are original. Traditionally made of wood, most have been burned down and rebuilt often several times in their history. Ōsaka Castle is a case in point. Largely destroyed by fire in the 19th century it was also affected by bombing in World War Two. Today it is made almost entirely of concrete.
