Antique Indian Silver Peacock
Ceremonial Silver Peacock
India or Sri Lanka
19th century
height: 13.5 cm
This elegant and finely executed peacock or Hamsa-like bird is of high-grade chased and cast silver and was most likely used to decorate a household or temple shrine, most probably one devoted to Krishna. Its wings are movable.
Six solid-cast bud-like attachments hang from its tail. The well-shaped, plump body is finely chased all over with plumage. The front of the tail is similarly decorated, and the reverse is elaborately chased with floral motifs.
The tail is open at the top allowing the insertion of actual peacock feathers or perhaps flowers to further enhance the display. Overall, this is a beautiful and highly unusual piece.
