Burmese Silver Bowl
Chased Silver Bowl
Burma
circa 1880
height: 8.5cm, diameter: 11cm, weight: 253g
This small, solid silver bowl is chased and repoussed with unusual scenes from Burmese folklore. Each figure or group of figures appears beneath an arch, and the arches are separated by interlocking leafy flourishes. A thin band of repeated floral motifs decorates the tip of the bowl, and a thin border of petals decorates the lowest part of the body.
The bowl is also unusual for its pt shape. This suggests that it might be from Pegu or Mandalay rather than Rangoon.
The base is flat and is engraved finely with a roundel of Burmese script.
