Burmese Silver Monk with Alms Bowl
Small Silver Figure of a Buddhist Monk with an Alms Bowl
Burma
circa 1880
height: 7.7cm, weight: 88g
This small image of a Burmese monk is of solid, high-grade silver. It has been cast and then chased and engraved with fine facial features and fine detailing for the robe. The figure stands on a domed stand with a band of pierced floral work.
The monk holds a large alms bowl in one hand from which he raises the lid with the other.
The figure most probably was made in the late 19th century and was intended as a keepsake for a colonial visitor.
