Colonial Burmese Silver
Fine Silver ‘Basket’ Box & Cover
Burma
circa 1890
height: 9.5cm, diameter: 11.3cm, weight: 232g
This unusual small box and cover has been cast, repoussed, chased and engraved to look like a woven cane basket with applied lacquered figures – but of course the entire confection is composed of silver.
The box sits on six small, low feet. The sharply concave sides and very finely repoussed with miniature figures in traditional dress from Burmese lore, separated by columns and leafy flourishes.
The lid has a prominent pull decorated with a sunflower motif. The flattened parts of the cover are finely repoussed with interlocking leaf motifs.
The cover sits over the box rather than in it.
Overall, this is a gem of an item and is in excellent condition.
