Durga Hindu Indian Bronze

SOLD

Bronze Image of Durga on a Yali  Mount

Orissa or Bengal, India

circa 1700

height: 16cm

This very fine, well cast image of Durga astride a yali-like mount has a superb chocolate patina. The image is very dynamic and three-dimensional in composition.

The base comprises a wide foot with cast beaded edging, a waisted plinth that is beautifully engraved with a border of lotus petals and then the final platform which also has a beaded edge. The yali has feet cast like human hands and tall, muscular legs that are embellished with scrolling vine or creeper flower bud motifs; a prominent, curled tail; and a dynamic, well-cast head with a gaping mouth and protruding tongue.

Durga sits on a saddle on the yali and has prominent breasts and four fleshy arms, three of which hold an attribute. She wears only a waistband and jewellery. A crown-like protuberance rises from her head and her hair is pulled into a large bun behind her head. Movable, applied wrist bands, possibly of silver, are around each of her four wrists.

Importantly, the image has been cast in one piece – quite an extraordinary feet given its very ‘3-D’ form and movement.

Overall, this is a highly unusual but very dynamic rendering of Durga with clear age and in excellent condition.
