Eight Immortals in Bronze
A Bronze set of the Eight Immortals (
Ba Xian
)
China, late 19th–early 20th century
height: 32 cm each
This magnificent set of the Eight Immortals is of finely cast bronze. The set was sourced from an old local Chinese family in Jakarta, Indonesia, that had dispensed with its Buddhist/Taoist beliefs in favour of Christianity.
Each immortal rides on the back or has been cast adjacent to an animal or mythical creature, and carries or wears traditional attributes. The robes of each flow naturalistically suggesting movement as they travel aboard their respective creatures.
It is rare to find a complete set of the Eight Immortals. More typically they are found in groups of three.
