Engraved Silver Tray, Persia, Iran
Finely Engraved Silver Tray
Isfahan, Persia/Iran
19th century century
length: 47cm, width: 33cm, height: 1.4cm, weight: 1,753g
This large tray, of rectangular form, with gently curved edges, is one of the finest engraved silver Persian trays we have seen. It is of thick, heavy, solid silver and is profusely engraved with exotic birds, lions and other animals amongst scrolling foliage and flowers – all arrayed in a style reminiscent of carpets produced in Isfahan.
The design incorporates an otherwise plain ribbon that winds itself around the tray that is finely engraved in Persian script with lines from the
Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, an eleventh-twelth century Persian poet and philosopher.
The tray is in excellent condition.
