Indian Islamic Wooden Koran Stand
Large Carved Wooden Koran Stand
Northern India
19th century
height (when standing and unfolded): 66.5cm, length: 73cm, width: 43cm
This unusually large stand comprises two rectangular panels, elaborately carved with fine, intricate scrolling foliage open work, with the feet as cusped arch spandrels.
Most probably it was commissioned for a North Indian mosque and was used to hold an especially large Koran.
See Christie’s London, ‘Islamic Art and Manuscripts, April 26, 2005, lot 236 for a related large Koran stand.
The item is in generally good condition with a minor age-related split and some minor chips. Overall, this Koran stand is highly decorative and of proportions that border on the monumental. The carving work is fine and the stand has an excellent patina.
