Javanese Reverse Glass Painting

SOLD

Reverse-Painted Glass Panel

Central Java, Indonesia

circa 1920-1950

length (including frame): 45.5cm, height: 35.5cm

This amusing framed painting is reverse-painted on glass. It shows nine figures all modelled as Javanese wayanag kulit (shadow leather puppets) characters.

There is flaking here and there to the painting but the colours are bright. The frame has been painted gold. The back is covered with wood panels – the age of which is obvious. The condition is stable and robust.
