Kutch Silver Jug

SOLD

Tall, Chased Silver Water Jug

Kutch, India

circa 1880

height: 33cm, weight: 1,063g

This very fine example of a silver Kutch water jug is tall and slender and rests on a slightly domed foot. Its most striking element is a particularly well-sculptured cobra that has slithered up the side in fleshy coils and which thereby acts as the handle.

The entire body of the jug is chased with scrolling, faceted foliage and flowers, that are typical of fine quality Kutch silverwork, all against a tooled ground. And amid all this profusion are exquisitely-rendered birds in flight, including somewhat whimsically, a crested cockatoo, native not to India but to Australia and parts of New Guinea.

The lower section of the bowl of the jug is embellished with a wide border of acanthus-like leaves, which are matched by similar leaf patterns on the foot.

The jug is in excellent condition and is without dents or repairs.
