Philippines Moro Punal Knife
Filigree Gold, Gilt & Marine Punal Knife
Islamic Moro People, Southern Philippines
late 19th century
length: 36cm
This straight-bladed punal knife comes from the Islamic Moro people of the southern Philippines. It shows much Malay influence. It has a steel blade; a gilt scabbard incised on both sides with Malay-Islamic scrolling vegetal motifs; a fine gold filigree and applied granule hilt segment; and a beautiful, toned marine ivory handle, probably made from dugong (sea cow) tusk.
Overall, this knife is an elegant and fine example of Islamic craftsmanship from the southern Philippines. There is evidence of past, light rusting to the blade but otherwise the item is in good condition.
