Shan Dha with Silver
Larger & Especially Fine Silver-Encased Dagger (Dha Hmyaung) with Woven Silver & Silver Filigree Decoration
Shan people, Burma
19th century
length: 49.3cm, weight: 376g
This fine short-dagger (dha hmyaung) from the Shan people of Eastern Burma features silverwork that is among the finest we have seen on such a dagger. Longer than most short daggers, it has an extremely fine grip made of bands of plaited silver wire and a hilt finial in the form of a large lotus bud.
The scabbard is of wood encased in high-grade sheet silver. The scabbard and the lower section of the hilt are decorated with superb bands of fine silver applique work, all of which remains intact.
The blade is single edged and fits snugly into the scabbard. It has only minor rust staining.
Overall, the dagger has fine proportions, and a wonderful patina. There are no losses or repairs.
