Silver Anklets, Rajasthan, India
Pair of Silver Anklets
Rajasthan, India
early 20th century
approximate diameters: 13cm overall; 7cm inside, combined weight: 1,133g
This pair of flexible silver alloy anklets open and close with a pin mechanism. They comprise a woven silver wire sub-structure to which attached are dozens of small silver flower motifs and many dozens of bell-like pendants cast in the shape of open seed pods. These knock against each other when the wearer moves to generate a pleasing ‘shimmering’ sound.
The pin covers are decorated with bunched silver ‘pearls’ – small silver spheres each separately but rigidly attached by wire to the sub-structure to simulate pearls, a technique known as
gajre in Rajasthan.
The anklets have a fine patina. They are in fine condition with no obvious losses. It is also rare now to come across a true pair.
