Spanish Colonial Silver
Spanish Colonial Silver Two-Handled Bowl
Chile
late 18th century
width: 19cm, height: 8.8cm, weight: 346g
This elegant, solid silver bowl sits on a flared ring foot, and has two leafy handles on either side.
The underside of the bowl is engraved finely with the initials M.P.’ It is not unusual to see the marks of the owner on Spanish colonial silverware from South America. One reason for this is that as households with extended family members changed and formed, individuals wanted to be clear as to who owned what for the sake of inheritance.
A related bowl is illustrated in de Lavalle & Lang (1974, p. 160).
The example here is in excellent condition. It is also heavy for its size.
