Sri Lankan Silver Box
Fine, Lozenge-Shaped Chased Silver Lidded Box
Sri Lanka
late 19th century
length: 14.5cm, width: 11cm, height: 4.5cm, weight: 339g
This particularly fine silver box is notable for its lozenge shape, scallopped sides, and very pleasing scrolling floral chasing work which covers the hinged domed lid and sides.
The lid fits tightly and is domed.
The base is beautifully engraved with a geometric floral design.
Such boxes were used by the Kandyan nobility and others to store small items of jewellery. Most probably they were also produced for the nineteenth century colonial market as keepsakes and to showcase the silversmith’s considerable skill.
The box has a good weight and is in excellent condition. It is one of the more beautiful Sri Lankan silver boxes of its type that we have seen.
