Straits Chinese Silver Parasol Handle
Chased Silver Parasol Handle
Southeast Asian Chinese, probably Singapore or Java
circa 1900
length: 10.5cm, weight: 26g
This small, well-made parasol handle is of solid silver sheet that has been deeply chased with grape leaf and shrews or squirrels with additional engraved borders of trellised plum blossoms.
It was acquired either in Singapore or Java by an English collector some decades ago and is a good example of Southeast Asian Chinese silversmithing work that might otherwise and erroneously be attributed to China itself and be catalogued as Chinese Export Silver.
It is in excellent condition. There are no maker’s marks.
Provenance:
private collection, UK.
