Thai King Niello Box
Niello Silver Box with Royal Cypher of Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), King of Thailand, in Gold & White Enamel
Thailand,
1960 or later
length of silver box: 20cm, width: 12.5cm, height: 5.7cm, weight: 720g
The main attraction of this niello silver box, as fine as it is, is that it is a presentation piece from the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej (ภูมิพลอดุลยเดช). It bares the King’s royal cypher in white enamel and high-carat gold on the centre of the hinged lid.
The remainder of the lid is decorated with fine niello work, with motifs that include a stylised kurtimukha mask surrounded by scrolled
kranok motifs.
The interior is lined with panels of burlwood. There is a central divider.
The base is stamped with ‘Sterling / Thailand’ and an indistinct maker’s name.
The box comes in a padded box covered in blue velvet. An internal label says in Thai and English ‘By appointment to HM the King / Thai Nakon / Silverware and Nielloware / Bangkok, Thailand’.
Both boxes are in excellent condition.
