Large Silver Bowl & Six Matching Smaller Bowls

Thailand

circa 1920

diameter of large bowl: 28cm, height of large bowl: 13.8cm, diameter of smaller bowls: 11.8cm, height of smaller bowls: 5.8cm

combined weight: 1,890g (1.89kg)

This fine matching set of six smaller bowls and one large bowl is of unmarked cast and chased silver. Each has a flattened base with gently rising sides that are decorated with roundels, each filled with a single thepanom figure amid foliage and Thai flame motifs. Thepanoms are nymph-like being from Thai Buddhist cosmology. The larger bowl has six roundels, evenly spaced, and the smaller bowls each have three. The roundels are within chased scrolling foliate borders.

The set most probably was made as a finger bowl set, with one larger bowl being the main bowl from which lemon-scented water was distributed to the six smaller bowls.

The set is in excellent condition and is without any dents, splits or repairs.
