Thai Silver Dish
Engraved Footed, Lotus-Form Silver Dish with Openwork Rim
Thailand
circa 1920
diameter: 25cm, height: 3.1cm, weight: 394g
This solid-silver dish in the shape of a large open lotus is almost certainly the product of a localised ethnic Chinese silversmith in Bangkok, Thailand. The wide, open-work rim is beautifully decorated with prunus or plum blossoms and foliage interspersed with small humming birds. The design is mirrored in the central roundel which is engraved with a fine and dense pattern of interlocking prunus sprays and humming birds in flight.
The dish sits on three baluster-spherical feet cast almost as native fruits.
The dish is marked to the underside with Thai characters and ’90’, suggesting the silver purity.
Such dishes served a variety of uses, including being used on altars to hold offerings.
The dish is in excellent condition.
