Baule Bronze Currency Anklet

This rather large ‘anklet’ functioned more as an item of currency and a store of wealth. It is in the form of an anklet and could be worn for ceremonial functions as part of a costume and when the wearer was seated.

It is cast in circular form, open at one end, and with a prominent ridge all the way around. The surface is decorated with cast geometric designs including spirals, and then further engraved with more geometric motifs.

Most probably the anklet is from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast.

It has a fine, aged patina, and is in excellent condition. It has its own custom-made metal stand, and is particularly sculptural when displayed on it.
