North African Pair of Heavy, Solid Silver Anklets

    Libya, Tunisia or Sudan
    19th-early 20th century

    internal diameter: approximately 8.3 x 9.3cm, combined weight: 779g

    Sold

    Provenance

formerly in the Collection of Colette Ghysels, Brussels

This pair of large, ‘C’-form anklets is from Tunisia or perhaps Libya. They might also be of Nubian origin. They are of heavy, solid silver. The two have been contoured so that they are more comfortable to wear, given their weight. They have been engraved or incised with geometric motifs.

A related pair, illustrated in Nadler (2005, p. 69), is attributed to the Berbers of Tunisia.

The pair has excellent wear and patina, and is in fine condition.
